| Thursday, 1 August, 2002, 15:38 GMT 16:38 UK 'I will never forgive Davy's killers' ![]() Mavis and her partner David Caldwell in happier times The partner of David Caldwell who was killed in an explosion at a Territorial Army base near Londonderry has been speaking of her grief. Mavis McFaul said she could never forgive the people who killed a "quiet man who would hurt nobody".
It was a shock and I just want to know why? Why us? Why Davy? He just went out to his work this morning like normal. He said to me: "I'll see you in the evening." Then I got the word at eight o'clock to get into Altnagelvin as soon as possible, that he was injured, seriously injured.
When I arrived at the hospital with my two daughters, a nurse told me that he had a hand injury and his face was bad. In between, I don't know what happened, it must have been his heart. He had a lot of injuries inside. Davy died at a quarter past nine. They couldn't save him. Davy was very quiet, I was the rowdy one. He lived for the house and for me and Gillian. He loved his animals. You never heard him speaking. I would like to say to the people who did this: "You're nothing but evil." I hope some day I'll meet them. What they have done to this family and a lot of other families... .why?
I want to know why are they doing this to people? People are trying to live, help each other. I thought that was my motive. But I will face the boy that done it. I will hate him for the rest of my life, because he has made three girls lose their father and made me lose a man. And I'll never forgive him, never. I want no retaliation for David's death. To give some other critter, some other mother like Davy's mother, and myself, a wife, the heartache that we're going through now. I wouldn't like any other family to suffer it. When I heard it on the news about other people, my heart went out to them, but I never knew it would come to my door. God help him, he died a terrible death with all the injuries he had. How could anybody do that to an innocent man who was very quiet and didn't hurt anybody? He would have helped anybody... that was just Davy. I'll never forgive them. Never. I hope they come to justice and I hope they can sleep in their beds at night. | See also: 01 Aug 02 | N Ireland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top N Ireland stories now: Links to more N Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
