 | | Friday, 10 May, 2002, 13:27 GMT 14:27 UK Belfast launches credit card parking  The new technology has cost the department �500,000 Belfast has become the first place in the UK where on-street parking can be paid for by credit card. Regional Development Minister Peter Robinson launched the scheme on Friday. The new technology has cost the department �500,000 and so far 110 of the new machines have been installed and more will be added in due course.
The technology is similar to machines already found in places like airport or multi-storey car parks. Parking charges will remain the same - 80 pence an hour - and the machines will still be able to accept cash as well as the main credit and debit cards. The minister said he was delighted that Belfast was the first city in the UK to use the latest technology. "This initiative will make short stay parking easier for everyone, including those who are short of change, shoppers and foreign visitors to Belfast who have no sterling," he said.
The new machines use mobile phone technology and take just seconds to issue a ticket and receipt. A central computer system means faulty machines can be quickly fixed.
