More violence in Belfast

Pipe bombs were thrown in a second night of trouble
At least three pipe bombs have been thrown and two army jeeps burnt out in a second night of violence in north Belfast.

Three police officers were injured as rival groups of nationalists and loyalists confronted each other in the Limestone Road area.

A police spokesman said order was largely restored by about midnight on Sunday.

Sinn Fein said the trouble began when a pipe bomb was thrown into the back of a house in Parkside Street.

"When people went out to see what happened a crowd of loyalists began a full scale riot," said a spokesman.

Loyalist community worker Eddie McClean said the trouble was a consequence of the shooting of two Protestants during riots in the North Queen Street area on Saturday night.

He said one of the men had been shot in the leg and the other through the mouth. Both have since been discharged from hospital.

Sunday's violence was not as bad as that which broke out on Saturday following the Rangers vs Celtic game, and involved up to 800 people.

38 injured

Police said 10 civilians and 28 officers were injured - two of the officers seriously - after trouble erupted in five flashpoint areas on Saturday.

The police, who came under fire as they tried to separate loyalists and nationalists, have rejected criticism that they were unprepared for the extent of the violence.

Superintendent David Boltwood said additional officers were out on the street, but the situation was difficult.

"No matter how may police officers we had here last night it would have been very difficult to contain the large-scale and widespread violence which our officers were confronted with."

Politicians, community leaders and police are to meet to discuss whether to increase security in the area.
