The dissident republican group the Continuity IRA has admitted the bomb attack on a police training college in Belfast earlier this week.

In a statement, the group claimed the new police service was still the RUC under a different guise.

The bomb attack on Tuesday night damaged gates and fencing at the Garnerville complex in the east of the city.

A police patrol was investigating reports of suspicious activity outside the college when they discovered a suspect parcel.

Army bomb experts were called in and about 100 people within the college were moved out, along with the residents of several surrounding homes.

The device exploded just after midnight while it was being examined.

The vice chair of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, Denis Bradley, said the bombing "could not halt the peace process".

A graduation ceremony for the first recruits to the new Police Service of Northern Ireland was held at the college earlier this month.
