Anyone over 18 can buy a crossbow under the current law. The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) has already written to assembly members asking for their support to tighten controls on the weapons. They said dozens of animals are killed or injured by crossbow arrows every year. Assembly member William McCrea said something must be done to prevent such attacks. Earlier this month, the USPCA condemned a crossbow attack on a horse as a disgraceful act.
Stephen Philpott of the USPCA said it was a disgraceful attack on a defenceless animal. The bolt was deeply embedded in the jaw of Willie Gallagher's horse. Charlie, the five-year old Clydesdale, was grazing above the Creggan estate when he was attacked. Charlie's owner said it was a cruel attack. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Northern Ireland stories now: Links to more Northern Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
