A medal to recognise the bravery of staff in the Northern Ireland Prison Service throughout the Troubles has been officially unveiled.

Advertisements have been placed in newspapers requesting applications for the medal from serving and past officers.

A total of 29 staff have been murdered and many others injured and intimidated over the past 30 years.

The Northern Ireland Office said the medal recognised "those who have rendered professional, committed and brave service as members of, and by others in support of, the Northern Ireland Prison Service".

Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid announced the publication of a Royal Warrant for the Northern Ireland Prison Service Medal on Monday afternoon.

He was replying to a written Parliamentary question from the MP Ian Cawsey.

Dr Reid said: "I am delighted that the staff of the Northern Ireland Prison Service are being recognised for the invaluable work they have carried out on behalf of the community over the last 30 years, often at great personal cost.

"Twenty nine officers have been murdered and others, and their families, subject to threats and intimidation.

"Despite that they have continued to act professionally and have provided an invaluable service to all the people of Northern Ireland."

Staff with five or more years service between 1971 and 2002 may be eligible to apply for the medal.

Discussions about a Prison Service Medal have been going on for some time.

However, new impetus was given to the talks in May 1998 when Prime Minister Tony Blair, , during a meeting with prison officers, urged the matter to be taken forward with his endorsement.

In August 2000, the Queen granted approval in principal to awarding a special medal.

At that time, Robin Halward, director general of the Prison Service, said staff and their families had lived under the constant fear of attack and intimidation.

The Prison Officers' Association said the award did go far enough to recognise the work of its members.
