 | | Saturday, 16 February, 2002, 09:21 GMT Poet backs bid for culture title  The Belfast Castle event is promoting local culture One of Northern Ireland's leading poets has lent his support to Belfast's bid to become European City of Culture in 2008. Belfast Castle is hosting a two-day event promoting the city, combining the best of traditional music with a series of debates on the subject of contemporary culture. Tom Paulin said his lecture would help to promote Belfast's efforts to capture the prestigious title. "If you grew up in this city, if you were educated here, you get a great sense of the brilliance of the city and the whole culture," he said.
"It is a very strong oral culture, which is why I've called my talk the Vernacular City. "The people of Belfast are masters of nicknames and jokes and story telling." Last month, a leading UK bookmaker placed Belfast as favourite to take the title. William Hill has offered odds of 10/3 on Northern Ireland's capital city taking the title ahead of its closest rivals, Newcastle and Liverpool.
