A dissident republican paramilitary group has admitted that it carried out a bomb attack which damaged a Fermanagh Customs and Excise office.

In a statement to a newspaper, the Continuity IRA said it was responsible for detonating a device at the customs office on the Killyhevlin Industrial Estate on Sunday.

The office was unmanned at the time and no-one was injured.

The crude bomb exploded after police received a telephone warning that a bomb had also been placed in nearby Ballinamallard.

Warning of other devices

The paramilitary group decribed the customs office has a "Crown target".

It also said it had issued warnings about devices at two hotels at Kesh and Ballinamallard in Fermanagh.

The police found nothing at either hotel.

The Continuity IRA said it had given "clear and adequate warnings" about all three devices.

The blast came after customs made a number of high-profile seizures of contraband cigarettes brought into Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic by dissident republicans.

A customs spokesman said the office was routinely not staffed over weekends.

"This is not the law enforcement arm of Customs - it deals more with duty and VAT paperwork," he said.
