 | | Thursday, 22 November, 2001, 07:37 GMT Device explodes in shop  The device was discovered in a sports shop Dissident republicans have been blamed for an incendiary device which partially exploded in a shop in County Down. The police said a cassette-type device, similar to that used by republicans in the past, was discovered in a sports shop in Hill Street in Newry. It was found in the pocket of a man's jacket by a member of staff as the shop was closing at about 1845 GMT on Wednesday.
The device was smouldering in a pocket of the jacket, but had burnt itself out. Local Ulster Unionist assemblyman Danny Kennedy said he believed it was left by the dissident republican paramilitary group, the Real IRA. He said this, and the discovery of a car bomb near Armagh, was "evidence that dissident republicans are determined to disrupt business life in the run up to Christmas". The fully-primed car bomb which was found near Armagh on Tuesday is being blamed on the Real IRA. Prevent Mr Kennedy said: "There is a major concern that attacks of this nature are being planned by extreme republican groups. "One hopes that the secretary of state and the government will put in place the necessary requirements to try to prevent attacks of this nature." The area around Hill Street was cordoned off for a short period of time, but later re-opened. | |
