Seventy five jobs are to be created as part of a 5m expansion by a west Belfast company.

Andor Technology makes electro-optical equipment, mostly for the export market.

It was originally formed by staff from the physics department of Queen's University in Belfast.

The investment has been partly funded by the Industrial Development Board.

The company said it was confident it would be able to attract suitable workers.

'Marketing people'

Company spokesman Donal Denvir said a variety of jobs would be on offer.

"These new jobs will be right across board," he said.

Presently more than 95% of our business is overseas

"They will range from people with PhDs, sales and marketing people and people in production.

"It is an expansion right across the whole company. Presently more than 95% of our business is overseas and that will still be the case."

Meanwhile, a County Armagh company has announced it is to shed nearly two thirds of its workforce.

The Radix Telecom factory in Portadown made the announcement on Monday, which will result in the loss of 76 jobs.

The company employs 119 people at the plant where satellite video receivers are made for the European market.

A company spokesman said they regretted the decision which was a result of a downturn, particularly in the American marketplace.

It is hoped that many of the redundancies will be on a voluntary basis.
