Driver injured in bus attack
The bus driver suffered facial injuries
The bus driver suffered facial injuries
A bus driver has suffered facial injuries after the windscreen of his vehicle was shattered by stone throwers in north Belfast.

The Goldliner evening express from Ballymena in County Antrim was attacked as the driver drove off the M2 at the Bawnmore estate on Wednesday night.

The driver was taken to the Mater hospital in hospital but later released.

However, he has to return to hospital on Thursday to have glass removed from his eyes.

There could have been carnage on the motorway

Ciaran Rogan

Ciaran Rogan from Translink condemned those who carried out the attack.

"Stone throwing on buses and trains is an ongoing problem, and youths in particular think it's a relatively innocent pastime," he said.

"But people really have to think about the potential consequences."

He praised the actions of the bus driver, which he said had saved lives.

"But for his bravery and professionalism in bringing his vehicle to a halt, there could have been carnage on the motorway.

"We would appeal to anyone with information to come forward with it."
