| Saturday, 21 July, 2001, 17:51 GMT 18:51 UK Irish police seize bomb equipment ![]() Home made explosives and revolvers were uncovered Irish police investigating the activities of dissident republicans have found a cache of explosives and arms in Donegal close to the Northern Ireland border. Gardai are continuing to search a wooded area at Porthall in Lifford on following the discovery, made as the result of a tip-off. The haul included 100 lbs of homemade explosives, a detonator, three timing power units, two handguns and 100 rounds of ammunition. It was discovered buried in a plastic drum near Lifford.
The dissidents are opposed to the Northern Ireland peace process and the role of mainstream republicans in the process. They have carried out a number of recent attacks on police and army installations in Northern Ireland. Their campaign has also targeted high-profile buildings in London including BBC Television Centre, the M16 building and Hammersmith Bridge. Police station attack The weapons find came after a nationalist politician blamed dissident republicans for carrying out a gun and bomb attack on Castlewellan RUC station in County Down on Friday. A blast bomb was thrown from a car and at about the same time up to six shots were heard in the attack on the building at about 2300 BST on Thursday. No-one was injured in the incident but damage was caused to a gate and a wall. The station was unmanned at the time. A pedestrian was passing the police station on the other side of the road at the time of the attack. The it was carried out in a residential area and left a lot of elderly people extremely frightened. SDLP assembly member Eamonn O'Neill, who lives opposite the station, suggested it could have been carried out by republican paramilitaries opposed to the peace process. He said: "The presumption is it's likely to be dissident republicans." |
