| Friday, 13 July, 2001, 16:02 GMT 17:02 UK Shots fired at home of ex-UDP man ![]() The former politican's home had been targeted before A former chairman of the loyalist Ulster Democratic Party has escaped injury in a gun attack on his County Antrim home. Joe English, a former talks delegate with the UDP, was with his wife and six-year-old grandchild when the attack was mounted. Three shots were fired through the window of the house at Doagh Road in Newtownabbey at about 0130 BST on Friday.
The UDP has been linked to the loyalist paramilitary Ulster Freedom Fighters/Ulster Defence Association. Mr English's house was also targeted by gunmen last December. The former politician once held a senior position within loyalism. He was a key figure in the process which led to the announcement of the ceasefire in 1994 by the loyalist leadership grouping, the Combined Loyalist Military Command. Resigned Mr English was also part of the UDP delegation which began exploratory talks with government officials later that year, as loyalism was brought into the political process. However, several years ago he resigned from the UDP and has played no role in politics since then. Police investigating this latest attack on his home say a white Vauxhall Cavalier car seen in the area at the time may have been used by those involved in the attack. They are appealing for anyone with information to contact detectives at Newtownabbey RUC station. | See also: Top Northern Ireland stories now: Links to more Northern Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
