 | | Thursday, 12 July, 2001, 09:16 GMT 10:16 UK Parades 'could be tourist attraction'  Mr Holland said a resolution to the parades issue is possible The Head of the Northern Ireland Parades Commission, has said he believes Portadown Orangemen will eventually walk the contentious route down the Garvaghy Road. In an interview with BBC Radio Ulster, Tony Holland also said the Orange Order would talk to his commission and the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition. He said that parading could become a tourist attraction in the province. "I believe it will happen sooner rather than later," he said.
"I also believe that as soon as it does happen, and we have engagement with us and engagement with the residents as I believe has happened in Derry between the Royal Black Preceptory, the Bogside Residents group and the City Centre Initiative, you immediately have a change of perception. Mr Holland said that an understanding between both sides in the Portadown dispute, where Orangemen have been prevented from marching through the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road area, could lead to a peaceful solution of the parades issue. "Eventually, and this may sound really optimistic, but I believe one has to be optimistic sometimes, that it could become a tourist attraction." | |
