| Monday, 19 March, 2001, 22:44 GMT Murder inquiry after pensioner stabbing ![]() Pensioner was stabbed near his home in Coleraine The police in Northern Ireland have begun a murder inquiry after a 73-year-old man died two months after being stabbed. Norman Moffatt was attacked by a youth at the junction of Railway Road and Circular Road in Coleraine, County Londonderry, on 26 January at 0730 GMT. He had been on his way home from collecting his daily paper when he was attacked. He underwent surgery for stab wounds to the abdomen at Coleraine Hospital. The pensioner, who was married with two children, died in hospital on Monday morning.
Reverend Robert Mullan of New Row Presbyterian Church said Mr Moffatt was a very quiet man. "He was a man who lived for his family, loved keeping pigeons and watched a lot of football on the TV as well," he said. Coleraine Mayor Liz Johnston has appealed for anyone with information to come forward "so that whoever has committed this dreadful crime can be caught." "We don't want this happening, not in Coleraine," she said. The attack was captured on a private security camera. The police say they are now treating their investigation into the attack as a murder inquiry. They say a 26-year-old man was arrested and interviewed shortly after the stabbing. He was released on police bail. |
