| Friday, 19 January, 2001, 13:33 GMT Nortel NI plant stops recruitment ![]() Global slowdown: 4,000 jobs lost worldwide The telecommunications company Nortel has confirmed it has stopped recruiting at its Northern Ireland plant. Nortel - which employs 2,500 people at Monkstown - had been expanding rapidly. But it has now shed 4,000 jobs worldwide because of the global slowdown in the technology sector. The Canadian company has said the work done at the county Antrim site is still in the fastest growing sector of its business, so the situation may change.
The firm has previously said the explosion in the use of the internet has resulted in soaring demand for its products. Nortel has made telecommunications transmission equipment in Monkstown and has been a market leader in the provision of fibre optic equipment. Meanwhile the Daewoo electronics firm in Carrickfergus has made 80 staff redundant. The Korean firm says the job losses are due to a strong dollar and a weak euro. |
