| Tuesday, 16 January, 2001, 06:24 GMT Irish school teachers to strike ![]() Teachers are seeking a 30% pay rise Secondary school teachers in the Republic of Ireland are starting a series of rolling strikes on Tuesday aimed at gaining a 30% pay rise. Hundreds of schools will be affected by the industrial action by members of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland. The association says teachers have not benefited from the economic boom of the last 10 years, which the Irish educational system has helped make possible.
However, the strike is causing concern about marks in this summer's leaving certificate - the exams which gain students a place in college. Barbara Johnston, who represents a parents association, said they were extremely angry. Talks are continuing between teachers and the government, but so far there is no sign of a breakthrough. |
