Staff made redundant leave plant

Some 54 people who were made redundant left their jobs at the Dyson plant in Malmesbury on Friday.

The staff all work in the Research Design and Development section and are mostly design engineers, technicians and support staff.

In October a spokeswoman for the company said it planned to close a number of projects in China which would result in redundancies in the UK.

At the time she said 64 people could lose their jobs at Malmesbury.

'Invention base'

Dyson's Malmesbury's research and development department works mainly on the company's vacuum cleaners.

In a statement the company said: "Unfortunately tough economic conditions mean tough business decisions.

"We've ceased projects in China and regrettably have had to make 54 people redundant in the UK.

"We aim to support those affected during this difficult time. Malmesbury, where over 1,000 people work for Dyson, continues to be our global headquarters and invention base."
