Union poised for council job cuts

Up to 50 jobs could go at Swindon Borough Council because of growing financial pressures.

The council said it was struggling with increasing demand for services in the face of an overall cut in funding and the effects of the economic downturn.

Ninety posts in total are being reviewed, but some of these are vacant, reducing the number to be cut.

The authority has been in talks with union leaders with further discussions due on Wednesday.

In a statement the council said it would do "whatever it can to find alternative work for people where it exists, but it is anticipated that approximately 50 people are likely to be made redundant".

Bob Cretchley, from Unison, said they would be doing their best to keep the numbers lost to a minimum.
