Alcohol-free zone plan for town
A designated alcohol-free zone is being introduced into the Wiltshire town of Calne.

It will be an offence for anyone to drink alcohol in the zone if asked not to by police, from 18 June.

The order was made by North Wiltshire District Council, and was created after consultation with the police, local licence holders and landowners.

The order gives powers to the police to ask for the alcohol to be handed over, and arrest offenders if they refuse.

The zone will be marked by signs.

Mark Rippon, community safety officer at the council, said: "The intention of the legislation is not to bring about a complete ban but to give police officers the discretionary power to control anti-social drinking."
