M4 pedestrian bridge is replaced
Four months of work to replace a 36-year-old pedestrian bridge over the M4 near Swindon have begun.

The Blackhorse Footbridge over the motorway between J15 and J16, the Swindon East and West turn-offs, is being demolished and replaced.

It restricts use of the hard shoulder, said the Highways Agency.

The hard shoulder will be closed during the work, which will cost 1.4m, and three narrower lanes will be in place on the east and westbound carriageways.

'Minimal effect'

A temporary 50mph speed limit will be in place, as will speed cameras.

The motorway will be closed between 2000 on Saturday and 0800 BST on Sunday.

Dave Sledge, from the Highways Agency, said: "The existing structure was built in 1971, and although still safe, is showing signs of reaching the end of its life.

"Most of the work can be carried out with minimal effect on road users."
