Academy school plan to go ahead
Plans to build a new academy school in Swindon have been given final approval.

The borough council's schools organisational committee made the decision on Wednesday night following two months of consultation.

The privately financed and independently run school will initially open on the Headlands school site in Stratton in September.

Some teaching unions have opposed the scheme, saying that academies are not value for money.

The academy will be run by the Christian organisation, United Learning Trust (ULT).

The ULT, which is involved in 11 academies nationally, is working with car-maker Honda to provide the necessary finance.

Although initially opening at the Headlands School site, the academy will be rebuilt on the Pinehurst People's centre site in 2008.
