Accused suspected secret affair
Hayley Richards
Mr Quintas said he suspected Hayley of having an affair
A Portuguese factory worker who slit his pregnant girlfriend's throat, has told Bristol Crown Court he suspected she was cheating on him.

Hugo Quintas, 25, said he thought Hayley Richards was cheating after hearing a man's voice when he phoned.

When the 23-year-old told him she was pregnant last May, he said he doubted he was the father, the court heard.

Mr Quintas denies murder but admits killing Ms Richards who was found dead in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in June.

Planned baby

Her throat had been cut from ear-to-ear by Mr Quintas, who fled the country a day after the killing.

He has pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend, but has admitted her manslaughter on the grounds of provocation.

Mr Quintas told how he had met Ms Richards in September 2004 in a public house in Trowbridge and slept with her on that night.

He said it was not long after taking a holiday, that he started to suspect she was having an affair with a chef at the restaurant where she worked.

He said he had phoned her and heard a man's voice in the background and challenged her about it when he returned home from work.

The trial continues.
