Player's thanks for alcohol help
Christian Roberts
The striker thanked his family and Sporting Chance for their support
Swindon Town footballer Christian Roberts has spoken of his gratitude for help overcoming a drink problem.

Mr Roberts, 27, was admitted to Sporting Chance centre in Hampshire in January after admitting to his club that he needed help.

"Booze was controlling my life, you know, everything was around alcohol," he said after leaving the centre.

"I can't thank Sporting Chance enough for giving me the chance to be here today," he said.

Mr Roberts described reading about his hero George Best in newspapers close to the soccer legend's death and realising he had to get help.

"The final nail in the coffin was when I saw George Best in the paper and in my eyes, you know he was a dead man and that is when it really hit home that I was doing damage to myself." he said.

The Welsh striker who joined Swindon Town in 2004 said he did not want his family to suffer anymore and thanked them for their unfailing support.

"I would go out on Saturday and not get home till Tuesday," Mr Roberts admitted.

"I would leave here (the county ground) feeling like I'd done my work and go to the boozer and drink 20 pints.

Christian Roberts left Sporting Chance on Thursday and was back training with the squad on Friday before travelling to Bradford for a game on Saturday.

"It felt great being on the pitch with a clear head," he said.
