Parents win battle over mast site
The mobile phone company Vodafone has withdrawn proposals to erect a 12-metre radio mast near a Wiltshire school.

Its decision follows discussions with parents of children at Tregoze Primary, in west Swindon, who opposed the plan.

Vodafone is now seeking permission to erect the mast at Tewkesbury Way, one of a number of alternative sites suggested by local residents.

A spokesman said the change of heart was not because the company believed there was a risk to health.

Acceptable alternative

Dr Rob Matthews said: "All of our proposals comply with stringent international guidelines that are designed to protect all individuals whether they be adults or child.

Marc Tielemans, chairman of governors

"We took account of the feedback from the local residents and investigated a number of alternative sites that they suggested."

Chairman of school governors Marc Tielemans said parents were very pleased with the result.

"Nobody wants a mobile phone mast next to school playing field," he said.

"But networks are being far more proactive, communicating with residents much better. It's because we got involved early on that we could do something about it."

The planning application for placing the mast at Tewkesbury Way will be heard next month.
