Fall in teenage pregnancy rates

Swindon has developed a sexual health training programme
The overall teenage pregnancy rate in Swindon is continuing to fall from the baseline set in 1998.

The 2004 figures show England's under-18 conception rate has declined by 9.8% - with Swindon's rates comparing favourably with a 9.2% fall.

Teenage pregnancy coordinator, Fran Birch said: "These encouraging figures make us even more determined."

It was hoped that by 2006, all health visitors and school nurses would be trained in contraceptive advice.

"In response to feedback from young people, we have developed a sexual health training programme for all staff working with young people across Swindon," said Ms Birch.

Lynda Wearn, Swindon's deputy director of public health added: "Through the many schemes and hard work already taking place in Swindon we are confident that the teenage pregnancy rate will continue to fall."

The news comes as the government annouced its plans to launch a campaign to target areas with the highest teenage pregnancy rates.
