School bans cakes in poison scare

Only shop-bought cakes will be allowed in future
A primary school has banned homemade cakes from its summer fete for fear they could cause food poisoning.

Parents of pupils at Crudwell CoE School in Wiltshire have been told to keep freshly-baked goods off the menu for health and safety reasons.

Headteacher Lisa Taylor said the decision to allow only shop-bought products was made following advice from the county council.

The decision was backed by governors of the school.

In a letter to parents, Ms Taylor wrote: "I'm sure many of you will join the school staff in the disappointment that this causes but I trust you understand we are obliged to follow health and safety procedures."

But Conservative County Councillor for Malmesbury John Thompson said: "It's preposterous - the world is full of people at the moment blowing each other up and we're worried about killer cream cakes.

"The WI and schools have been making jam and cakes and other things for fundraising events for years - and nobody's died from it.

"We are creating a nation of namby-pambies - soon we'll be wrapping our children up in big bundles of cotton wool."

Wiltshire County Council said the advice it gave was only intended as a guideline, and it was up to each school to decide what was appropriate.

A council spokesman said: "Schools should avoid selling home-made products which carry a higher than normal risk of food-related illnesses, including cream or other dairy products, mayonnaise, eggs, fish and meat.

"The person who provides the food, the school or the county council could be held liable if somebody did become ill as a result of food that has been prepared or stored incorrectly."
