Charles Ingram had denied the charges at Southwark Crown Court |
TV quiz cheat Major Charles Ingram has lost an appeal against the financial penalties he faces for trying to swindle Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. But lawyers for his wife Diana successfully argued on Wednesday she should not have to pay fines or costs for her part in the fraud.
The couple, from Wiltshire, were each ordered to pay fines of 15,000 with 10,000 costs in April last year.
They were found guilty of securing the 1m winner's cheque by deception.
The pair, both 40, were originally found guilty by a jury at Southwark Crown Court.
They each received an 18-month suspended jail sentence.
Their accomplice, college lecturer Tecwen Whittock, whose coded coughs from the audience were used in their bid to pocket the seven-figure cheque, received a 12-month suspended sentence and was fined 10,000.
There was no appeal by Whittock before the Court of Appeal on Wednesday.
