David Hempleman-Adams achieved the Explorers' Grand Slam

The balloonist and polar explorer will leave for Colorado, USA, in March to prepare for the bid.

The attempt could break the world altitude record of 10,859m, set by Per Lindstrand in November 1996.

It follows Adams's successful record-breaking trans-Atlantic balloon flight last year.

Before the launch, from Greeley just north of Colorado at the beginning of March, the father-of-three from Box is on a strict diet because of the critical weight of the helium and hot air mix balloon.

"There is no such thing as an easy world record. It requires good teamwork, attention to details and motivation," he said.

In 1998, the 46-year-old was the first to achieve the Explorers' Grand Slam: reaching both the North and South Geographical and Magnetic Poles and scale the highest mountain in each of the seven continents.
