Residents warned on bogus callers
Emergency services in Wiltshire are warning householders to be on their guard after a spate of recent distraction burglaries.

The offences began in December last year, and have been committed right across the region.

Of particular concern, says the Wiltshire Fire Service, are reports that a man, falsely claiming to be working for the brigade, has been calling residents and offering free fire safety checks.

A police spokesman said: "Bogus callers will pretend to be authentic - officials from the council, gas, electricity or water companies, for example.

"They may say they are workmen needing to carry out repairs, or even claim to be police or fire officers.

"A genuine visitor will always make an appointment first, so you should be wary if someone turns up unexpectedly.

"Always ask for proof of identity and check it carefully, keeping the chain on the door.

"Genuine callers will carry identification with their photograph and details of their company or businesses."
