The junior wardens work with adults in a pilot scheme |
Junior street wardens working in a pilot scheme in Swindon have won a national award.
The accolade for the young people in the Parks and Walcot East area of the town has come from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
In a competitive category, the Swindon nomination was said to have been outstanding for the hard work and commitment of all those involved.
Nearly 100 young people aged between eight and 14 take part in the scheme.
In return for their community contribution, they are offered the chance to take part in various activities including visits to the emergency services and museums.
'Good citizenship'
Swindon Borough Council's lead member for community safety said: "This award recognises the enthusiasm and hard work these young people are putting in to make the area where they live a cleaner and safer place for all.
"I also believe that the junior wardens are positively promoting good citizenship, not only to other young people but also to all members of the community."
The street wardens pilot scheme was launched in July 2002.
The juniors are co-ordinated by Christopher Neville-Jones who has been praised in the award scheme for his "outstanding" work.
