Archie-Lee Hirst died from multiple injuries |
Detectives investigating the death of a one-year-old boy who was mauled by a pet dog will focus their inquiries on speaking to the local community. Archie-Lee Andrew Hirst was killed by the rottweiler at his grandparents' home in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
In tributes, his mother Becki Hirst, who has just turned 18, said her son was her "sleeping angel".
Det Supt Steve Payne said the family were "inconsolable" and would not return to the house until the New Year.
An inquest into the child's death would be opened on Wednesday at Wakefield Coroner's Court, a West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said.
Inquiries were now focused on speaking to relatives, neighbours and local businesses.
"Obviously the investigation into the circumstances of Archie-Lee's death is still in its early stages," said Mr Payne.
"The family remain inconsolable and are being supported by relatives and friends, as well as specially trained officers.
"The focus of our investigation currently is carrying out house-to-house inquiries, speaking to neighbours and local business owners in the area to build up a picture of anything that will help the investigation."
Rescue attempt
Miss Hirst said her 16-year-old sister Kara, who tried to save Archie-Lee from the dog, was a "hero".
The boy's aunt had been looking after Archie-Lee and her two sisters, aged six and seven, at the house in Chald Lane at the time of the attack on Friday afternoon.
She kicked and struck the dog, which police said weighed between seven and 10 stone, after it pulled the boy from the arms of the seven-year-old girl.
Miss Hirst said: "My boy was my world. He is loved by many. He will always be in our hearts, never to be forgotten."
The two-and-a-half year old rottweiler was killed by police following the attack as it was "clearly representing a potential danger to others".
