Supertram backers met ministers in London on Monday |
A decision on the future of the Leeds Supertram will be made as soon as possible, according to the government. Transport Minister Tony McNulty met the team behind the project on Monday and said he understood the need for a decision but needed more information.
A spokesman for Metro, the West Yorkshire transport executive, said they saw the meeting as "positive".
Transport officials have warned the project could be axed unless funding is approved soon.
The government suspended the project in July 2004 after costs spiralled to more than 500m.
A revised scheme has cut costs to 355m by cutting 4.5miles from the proposed route.
"There is some further work to be done on the accounting treatment of the revised bid. The team started that work on the train back to London and will provide the Department of Transport with the information as soon as possible," the Metro spokesman said.
A spokesman for the minister said he understood the need for a decision and would make one as soon as possible but needed more clarification about the scheme before he was in a position to do so.
