Patients who had operations cancelled will be contacted shortly |
Power has been restored to St James's Hospital in Leeds following a blackout lasting 20 hours. The electricity supply was switched back on at 12.45pm on Friday after engineers worked around the clock.
Some operations had to be cancelled and those needing emergency treatment had been told to attend Leeds General Infirmary instead.
A spokesman said emergency patients could attend St James's again and added things were getting back to normal.
Mains severed
The hospital ran on emergency generators following a landslip during excavations on the site of a new cancer wing.
The slip severed electricity cables and a gas main.
Greg Moulds of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: "The gas main needed to be repaired before any work could take place on the electricity cables.
"Both pipes and cables were in an awkward spot to get to and there were concerns about instability following the landslip."
Patients who had their non-emergency operations cancelled would be contacted with new dates as soon as possible, he added.
The hospital's heating system was not affected although patients did have to have a cold lunch on Friday, he said.
"We will make sure they get a hot dinner this evening," he added.
"You never know until something happens how well emergency plans will work out but we are pleased ours turned out well."
