Pc murder accused 'was in shop'
Pc Ian Broadhurst
Pc Ian Broadhurst was shot and killed on Boxing Day
A man accused of murdering a police officer admits being in a shop near the scene minutes before the shooting, his defence has team said.

David Bieber is accused of shooting Pc Ian Broadhurst in Leeds on Boxing Day.

The jury was shown CCTV images of a man buying a newspaper and defence barrister Michael Beckman QC admitted this was Mr Bieber.

Mr Bieber, 38, denies shooting Pc Broadhurst and the attempted murders of Pcs Neil Roper and James Banks.

Three shots

In a written statement, shop co-owner Shahid Mayet said he served the customer, who he said bought a copy of the Racing Post, Yorkshire Evening Post and a chocolate bar.

Twenty minutes later Mr Mayet heard three gunshots and ran out of the shop in Dib Lane to investigate.

He told the court a woman shouted at him that three police officers had been shot.

Before the jury heard any evidence from prosecution witnesses, Mr Beckman was given permission to address the jury.

He said: "You will find as the case proceeds and particularly when the defendant comes to give his evidence, that there is only one real issue in this case and, no one can really disagree, that is: was he, David Bieber, the man in the car at the time of the shooting?

"That is the only issue you have to really concentrate on in this case."

Pistol cartridges

Mr Beckman said the jury should return not guilty verdicts if they did not think the case had been proved beyond reasonable doubt

Mr Bieber, of Springwood Road, Oakwood, Leeds, also denies possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of 200 9mm bullet pistol cartridges.

He admitted possessing 298 9mm bullet cartridges without a firearm certificate on the first day of the hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.

The trial was adjourned until Thursday when Pc Neil Roper, who was shot twice in the incident, is expected to give evidence.
