Leeds has become the latest city to use a new way of marking household property in an effort to reduce burglaries. Smartwater is a liquid containing genetic material which marks valuables with a code unique to each household.
The code can be read using an ultra violet light and unlike traditional property marking pens is almost impossible to remove.
The device is being handed out to Leeds homes, starting with those frequently targeted by thieves.
'Too hot'
Crime Reduction Manager John Birkenshaw said: "Over the next few weeks we'll be flooding Leeds with Smartwater with the ultimate aim of protecting the whole district.
"It will become a pointless place for criminals to burgle.
"The valuables are too hot to handle because we can prove beyond doubt that they are stolen and we'll be halting criminals in their tracks."
Smartwater is already in use in other parts of the country.
It is claimed that in some areas, house burglaries have been cut by over 50% since its introduction.
