The partnership says speed cameras have lowered the death toll |
Fewer people are dying on West Yorkshire's roads than at any time in the last 30 years, new figures show. The number of fatalities on all of the county's roads fell 30% to 102 in 2003 from 144 in 2001, the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership says.
The figure is the lowest since records began in 1974.
Partnership spokesman Phillip Gwynne said speed cameras had helped reduce the death toll and motorists were "generally taking more care".
Thornton Road in Bradford has seen casualties fall from 11 to just four last year.
Dewsbury Road in Wakefield has seen a reduction of 11 deaths over the same period.
Four deaths were recorded on Tong Road in Wortley, Leeds, last year compared to 18 in 2000.
And the partnership says the A629 Wakefield Road in Huddersfield recorded 23 incidents in the year 2000 but just six in 2003.
