Police hope the new scheme will deter city centre shoplifters |
Police in Leeds are circulating the pictures of around 40 prolific shoplifters to stores in the city centre in a clampdown on retail crime. Many on the list have anti-social behaviour orders against them and in some cases the individuals are banned from the city centre.
Around 150 shops are to get photographs of known repeat offenders.
They will also be given two-way radios which staff can use to alert other stores to concerns about individuals.
The radio transmissions are monitored continually by police community support officers, who will move in to help when necessary.

PC Tony Potter, a crime reduction officer at West Yorkshire Police, said: "We are hoping to deter the hard core of shoplifters who return time and time again.
"The police and participating stores know what you look like and together we will share information about your movements.
"This intelligence will be used to track you down and arrest you.
"We are saying to them if you do come into the city centre you are being watched and we will get you."
Security offices which monitor the city's CCTV camera network have also been supplied with photographs of the worst culprits.
The album contains regularly-updated police images of convicted prolific offenders believed to be active in the area.
Shop workers taking part in the initiative also receive training in how to deal with thieves and member stores can display stickers in shop windows indicating they belong to the scheme.
