Coal mines tap into big cash seam
Kellingley Colliery
Kellingley Colliery is due to receive 7.2m
Coal mines in Yorkshire are set to benefit from a huge slice of government cash as part of the Coal Investment Aid Scheme.

The pits in West and South Yorkshire will all share in the 36m cash injection announced by the Energy Minister Stephen Timms.

Kellingley Colliery in West Yorkshire will get 7.2m while Hay Royds pit near Huddersfield will receive 140,000.

South Yorkshire's Harworth, Maltby and Rossington will share 10.2m

But Hatfield Colliery near Doncaster has yet to accept the cash offer which remains on the table until the end of March.

Energy Minister Stephen Timms said the awards would help safeguard 3,500 across the country.

The cash would also ensure the "medium-term economic viability" of the mines, he added.
