Organisers apply for festival licence
Fans arriving for the 2003 festival
50,000 people attended the weekend event last year
Organisers of the 2004 Leeds Festival have applied to return to last year's venue - Bramham Park on the eastern edge of Leeds.

Mean Fiddler moved the annual music event to the privately- owned estate in 2003 after violence marred previous festivals at Temple Newsam Park in Leeds.

An application for a licence to hold the event on the last weekend in August was submitted to Leeds City Council before Christmas.

Members of the public have until 15 January to lodge objections.

I believe a successful festival is a real bonus for Leeds
Councillor James Lewis

Last year, some residents in villages near Bramham Park tried to stop the festival being moved there, fearing they would be overwhelmed by 50,000 music fans.

But after the event, the chair of the parish council in nearby Thorner, Catriona Laycock, admitted disruption had been less than expected.

A licence for the 2003 festival was not granted by until May.

Mean Fiddler's early application for permission to run the 2004 event has been welcomed by one of the city councillors representing Thorner, James Lewis.

Councillor Lewis added that he could understand why there was concern last year from local people as the Leeds Festival was being held at Bramham Park for the first time.

"Fortunately the event was a success," he said, "and I hope the detailed planning and management that went into last year's festival continues.

"I believe a successful festival is a real bonus for Leeds."
