Tunnel work closes rail link
Rail tracks
Rail tracks are being replaced in the tunnel
Rail travellers between Leeds and Harrogate will have to make alternative arrangements for the rest of the month.

Network Rail is carrying out work costing 10m in the Bramhope Tunnel which means the line has had to be closed.

The track and the drainage system are being replaced along the two-and-a-quarter mile tunnel between Horsforth and Weeton which is prone to flooding.

Replacement bus services will operate between Harrogate and Leeds.

Speed restrictions

The only rail services operating on the line during August will be from Horsforth to Leeds.

Before the work, trains were subject to severe speed restrictions in the tunnel.

But the speed limit will be raised to 60mph once work is completed which is due to be on 31 August.

August has been chosen for the work as there are fewer rail users during the holiday period.

Network Rail says it will be checking on progress each day to make sure the work runs to schedule.
