Brave Jane heads region's honours list

Jane Tomlinson MBE, selfless work for charity
The courage and dedication of cancer sufferer and fundraiser Jane Tomlinson has been recognised with a MBE in the Queen's Birthday honours list.

The fundraising efforts of the 38-year-old from Rothwell, Leeds, include the 1,060-mile bike ride from John O'Groats to Land's End, the London Marathon and Great North Run.

So far the mother-of-three has raised more than �135,000 for cancer charities.

Mrs Tomlinson said: "I was very surprised (about the MBE) because it wasn't something I set out to do.

"When I started fundraising I didn't have any idea it would get so big, and it's a huge honour to have been recognised by having this honour placed on me."

Meanwhile, Ben Gill, President of the National Farmers' Union, who farms at Easingwold, North Yorkshire, receives a knighthood for services to agriculture, conservation and the community.

He said: "It is a great honour to have such an award made and something that I greatly appreciate.

"But I recognise that it has been made to me as the leader of a highly-professional organisation with a back-up capability which is second to none and which is the envy and role model of many."

The actor Ian Carmichael, who lives near Whitby, North Yorkshire, receives the OBE for services to drama.

Councillor Mick Lyons, chairman of the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority, is made an OBE for his services to public transport.

Isadora Joyce Aiken, is made a CBE for her work at Sheffield Hallam University and services to education and the community in the city.

Rose Jackson, founder member of the Gateway Club in Hessle, near Hull, is made an MBE for services to special educational needs in the area.
