 Yorkshire tops the rehoming league |
The RSPCA rehomed more than 13,500 unwanted, abandoned or ill-treated animals in Yorkshire and the North East last year, it has been revealed. On average 37 animals are placed with new owners in the region every day.
The figure represents 21% of the total number of animals rehomed nationally each year by the charity.
Last month the Yorkshire and Humber region was identified in an RSPCA report as the worst place in the country for animal cruelty.
Nearly 200 cases of abuse were prosecuted during 2002 after animals had been shot, stabbed, starved and deliberately tortured.
In one case last year a Halifax man threw a cat to its death from a seventh-floor flat.
The new report also shows that RSPCA volunteers made more than 9,000 home checks prior to animal adoptions.
