A woman who played a pivotal role in helping families hit by the collapse of the Longbridge car plant is recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. Car worker's wife Gemma Cartwright, 32, who is appointed MBE, campaigned for her friends and neighbours in 2005. Leaders of industry, the arts and sport are among those recognised in the list, together with local unsung heroes. Among them is Solihull school crossing warden Mrs Ann Conway, who also becomes an MBE. Dr The Rev Stuart John Burgess, Chair of the Commission for Rural Communities, also becomes a CBE, as is Peter Hawthorne, Head of 14-19 Development at Wolverhampton City Council, for services to education and to local government. Mrs Gurdev Kaur Abrol is appointed OBE for voluntary service to Sikh and Asian women in the West Midlands. Ms Zena Jane Wooldridge, director of sport at the University of Birmingham and Chair of England Squash is also appointed OBE, for services to sport. The Queen's Police Medal was awarded to Ms Laura Anne Burford, a constable with West Midlands Police.
