Steel company plans extra holiday

Steel firm Corus has announced plans for workers at two West Midlands sites to take an extra week of holiday at Christmas due to the economic slowdown.

On Thursday the company announced plans to cut 100 jobs in the West Midlands.

It said it was agreed practice to take up to two weeks holiday at Christmas at sites in Wolverhampton and Wednesbury.

Corus said the workforce in Wednesbury had agreed to take an extra seven days leave but it was still in talks with unions over the Wolverhampton site.

The firm, which employs 200 people at the two factories, said: "These measures will help to minimise our costs, particularly electricity costs which have risen sharply."
