Marathon bid blind man flies out

A blind man who plans to run seven marathons in seven days is flying out to the Falkland Islands.

Dave Heeley, known to friends as Blind Dave, aims to run his first marathon in the South Atlantic islands on 7 April.

Mr Heeley, of West Bromwich, will then run in Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Sydney, Dubai and Tunis before running the London Marathon on 13 April.

The 50-year-old, who is guided by a fellow runner, is raising money for the Guide Dogs For The Blind Association.

He was given a rousing reception at the Hawthorns stadium of his beloved West Bromwich Albion where he addressed the crowd on Saturday.

If successful, he will be the first blind person to have complete the endurance test.

It has previously been completed by adventurers Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Mike Stroud.
