Crashes leave parked cars wrecked

Emma Hulme wants speed bumps installed
A Black Country couple has seen four cars written off by speeding drivers outside their home in a year.

Giles and Emma Hulme are now calling for speed bumps to be installed in Queen's Road, Tipton.

Sandwell Council said it was considering installing traffic calming measures on the 30mph street.

The couple said they had been unable to claim insurance for three of the cars as the vehicles which crashed into them were stolen and their drivers ran away.

The Hulmes' said the crashes were caused by speeding drivers failing to cope with a sharp bend next to their house.

'Awful situation'

The latest smash was on 8 December and the couple said the total cost of replacing the cars was 4,000.

Giles Hulme said: "We're just lying in bed at night and we hear the bang and we know it's going to cost us money.

"I can't go on like it for much longer, I think."

His wife Emma said she was worried that, with two schools on the road, a child could soon be injured.

She said: "If it's not our cars it's going to be the house, it's going to be a child.

"Is that what it's going to take a child's death? It's an awful situation."

Other neighbours on the street have complained about speeding drivers. Ray and Maureen Bowden said their front wall had been knocked down three times in three years.

Councillor Mahboob Hussain said he was investigating the problem.

"We understand the concerns and I have asked officers to reinvestigate and assess the speeds in this road," he explained.

"Speeding enforcement is essentially a matter for the police and in the meantime we will bring Queen's Road to their attention again."
