Letters go out over pay cut plan
Staff protest
Hundreds of staff protested at the plans in the city centre
Thousands of Birmingham City Council staff have received letters telling them their salaries will be cut by thousands of pounds.

The council wants to change its pay structure to reduce long-standing wage inequalities among staff.

A total of 4,000 staff were expected to be told their pay would be reduced.

However, the council said that about 45% of its 41,000 workers would receive a "considerable increase" in their salaries.

Last week, hundreds of members of staff protested in the city centre against the plans.

Some have said the change could mean their salaries will be cut by more than 6,000.

Alan Rudge, the council's human resources spokesman, said each letter would contain details of how people could appeal against the changes.
