Police fear more people may drink and drive during the World Cup |
Anyone arrested for drink-driving in the West Midlands will now be tested for drugs as part of a new campaign. A summer clampdown on drink-driving coincides with the barbecue season, warmer weather and the World Cup.
West Midlands Police is extending its Drugs Intervention Programme (DIP), to see if suspects have also been taking banned substances.
It said drug-driving is becoming a "significant growth area" as the cause of road crashes.
Research shows drivers in their 20s and the over 45s are most likely to offend, said police.
'Please think'
Ch Insp Steve Palmer said: "We want them to enjoy the matches but urge them to consider how they are going to get home before they go out.
"Drink-driving can and does prove fatal. Please think before you drink before you drive."
Some 16% of drivers tested in the region's Christmas drink-drive campaign were found to be over the limit.
Of more than 20,000 motorists stopped, more than three-and-a-half-thousand were tested, resulting in 552 positive results.
