Heatwave hits airport passengers
Birmingham International Airport
Passenger numbers have fallen for the second month running
Airport bosses have blamed the summer heatwave for a second monthly fall in the number of passengers flying abroad.

Some 955,872 passengers used Birmingham International Airport (BIA) during July, down 6.7% on last year.

It follows a passenger drop in June, which was blamed on a cargo plane crash which disrupted flights, the World Cup and the loss of the MyTravelLite group.

Bucking the trend, however, were flights to the Indian sub-continent which saw a 12.5% rise in passengers.

A spokeswoman for BIA, the UK's 5th largest airport, said: "Anecdotal evidence suggests that many have chosen to stay at home and bask in the great British summer."
